You Can Now Edit Face Tags in Google Photos!
I love using Google Photos to access all my photos. Ever since it launched in May of 2015 there has been one thing that has always annoyed me. I have 3 kids. But, if you were to look at my people in Google Photos, you would think I only have 1. I do not have twins, but yes my 3 young kids all look alike.
Just the other day I was looking at the number of photos of I have of each of my kids. There were about 10,200 photos of my oldest, and… 240 of my middle kid and about 12 of the newest addition to the family. I have tried to use Google’s recommended method of removing the pictures that do not belong in the people album and it is supposed to re-identify who it is, but I haven’t had very much luck with that.
The automatically generated “They grow up so fast” videos are supposed to showcase one kid’s growth, but they often show pictures of my other children. I get so into watching it and I think how awesome it is that it finds great pictures. Then all of a sudden I am surprised to see a picture of my other child and I’m like, wait a minute, she was just 4 in the movie and now it is showing pictures of a 2-year-old?
This is no longer going to be a problem!
As of last week, Google has solved this issue by adding the ability to edit and add face tags!! I am very excited about this news, but that means I now have some work to do on those 10,200 photos! It is a very manual process, but let me show you how to do it.
First you need to make sure you have the latest version of the Google Photos app and make sure that your photos are being backed up with Group Similar Faces turned on.
Here’s how to edit the face tag
- Tap a photo from the Photos tab
- Tap on the ellipsis (3 dot menu) at the top right
- Scroll down to where the People section is and click on the pencil on the right side
- Tap on the face you’d like to add
- Tap on the person from the list of Recent people or All People and Pets (The list of people is in order from most photos to least photos)
- Tap Done at the top right
The photo can now be searched for and used properly in Live Albums and used to make awesome movies like, “They grow up so fast”.
Limitations:
There are a few limitations to this:
- You cannot add face tags – Google will still use their algorithm to decide what is a face, so there is no way to identify faces that it doesn’t find
- You cannot modify who it identifies in movies
- You cannot modify the face tag from within an album- you’ll need to find the photo within the Photos tab or in face group
This feature is not yet available for iPhone.
Please excuse me while I go through my thousands of photos and properly select which child is really in the photo.
